Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a familiar skin disorder caused by the multiplying of skin cells, 10 times more than usual. Suffering from this condition causes the skin to build red bumpy patches covered with white spots. These patches can be observed anywhere on the skin, including elbows, knees, and scalp. Psoriasis is a non-contagious disorder caused by about 10 million people per year, in India, so people suffering from this are not alone. Psoriasis generally appears in early adulthood. Only a few areas are affected in most cases.
Watch out for these symptoms:
-
Dry or cracked skin
-
Red patches with white scales
-
Itching and burning on bumpy red patches
-
Plaques of scales or redness on the scalp
Causes
The cause of psoriasis is not yet known, but it is believed that an attack on the immune system causes inflammation, which can lead to psoriasis. When the immune system is compromised, it can trigger the irregular growth of skin cells. Normally, skin cells are replaced every 10 to 30 days. With psoriasis, new cells grow every 3 to 4 days. The buildup of old cells being replaced by new ones creates those white scales on the skin. Some families tend to have psoriasis run over generations, which can be a cause of psoriasis.
Treatments
Luckily, some treatments are developed to control the growth and triggering of psoriasis. The treatments aim to slow the growth of the skin cells and contain the spreading. There are three types of treatments available:
-
Topical: In this type, the condition is treated with ointments and creams prescribed by your doctor.
-
Phototherapy: The disorder is controlled by exposing the skin to Ultraviolet light.
-
Systemic: Oral and injected medications are prescribed that work throughout the entire body.
